Knocking or Clunking From the Suspension
Suspension noise is rarely the strut itself. In most cars the source is a joint, a bush or a link. The distinction matters a lot because the cost differs hugely — and some garages quote struts because struts are more expensive.
Likely causes
- Stabiliser links
Cause number one for light knocking over small bumps. A relatively cheap part.
- Control arm bushes
Rubber cracks in the heat and gives a deeper clunk, especially under braking.
- Top strut mounts
Produce a knock when turning the wheel at low speed.
- Worn ball joint
A knock plus a vague feeling through the steering. This is a safety part and needs prompt attention.
- The strut itself
Less common — a tired internal damper or a loose mounting.
What to do right now
- Pin down when it happens: over bumps? turning? braking? That narrows it a lot
- Note which side it comes from
- If the steering feels vague or shakes, treat it as a safety issue — don't delay
- Record the noise while driving and send it on WhatsApp
What it typically costs
A lifted suspension inspection is free. After that it depends on the part: stabiliser links, control arm bushes or top mounts — and we show you the worn part before replacing it.
