BMW air suspension is usually rear-axle only (X5, X6, 5 Series Touring), while X7 and 7 Series run air on both axles. That distinction changes diagnosis completely — a sagging rear on an X5 has specific causes that differ from a car with a full four-corner system.
The system used
Electronic Height Control (EHC) and VDM — on models: X5 E70 / F15 / G05, X7 G07, X6 E71 / F16, 7 Series F01 / F02 / G11, 5 Series Touring, E53 X5.
Recurring faults on this brand
- Rear air spring leaks
The signature fault on X5 E70 and F15. Both sides typically fail months apart.
- Weak EHC compressor
Long run time at start-up and a warning that appears in cool weather and clears in heat.
- "Chassis Stabilization – Drive Moderately"
A recurring message accompanying suspension or height sensor faults.
- Compressor relay and supply circuit
A known failure point that stops a perfectly healthy compressor.
- Rear ride-height sensors
Connector corrosion from humidity and dust causes intermittent readings.
- VDM electronic dampers
On dynamically controlled models — failure of the solenoid inside the damper.

A note from the workshop
On X5 E70 and F15 we recommend replacing both rear springs together. When one fails the other usually follows within a year, and doing both saves an entire labour charge.
